Mamidikaya Pappu Recipe | How to make Mamidikaya Pappu | (Dal with Raw Mango)

Hi friends, today's recipe is mamidikaya pappu aka dal with raw mango or green mango. We can prepare different varities of recipes with raw mangoes. It is the season for raw mangoes or mamidikayalu. Mango dal is mostly prepared in Andhra. Mamidikaya pappu is a classic dish prepared during every occasion in this season. Mamidikaya pappu is the most favourite dish in my house when accompanied it with appadala pindi/Papad Mix. Mango pappu is the best accompaniment for hot piping rice and a spoonful of ghee on top of it.

Mamidikaya pappu

Raw mango pappu a best side dish for rice.

Ingredients:
  • 1 Raw Mango
  • 1 Cup Toor Dal
  • Salt to Taste
  • 1/2 Tbsp Red Chilli powder
  • 1 Tsp Asafoetida/Hing
  • 1 Tbsp Oil
  • 1 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 cumin Seeds
  • 2 Red Chillis
  • 6 to 8 Garlic (optional)
  • 5 to 7 Curry Leaves
  • 5 to 7 Curry Leaves
  • Fistful Coriander Leaves
Procedure:
  1. Pressure cook toor dal for three whistles.
  2. Once the pressure reduces take the dal out and mash. Keep it aside.
  3. Peel the skin and cut mango into cubes.
  4. Peel the skin of garlic, if you are not adding them, you can skip this step.
  5. Heat oil in a thick bottomed vessel, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chillis and hing.
  6. Once they start spluttering add garlic and curry leaves.
  7. Add mango pieces and stir well.
  8. Add salt and turmeric powder. Combine them well.
  9. Add little water.
  10. Cover the vessel and cook for 3 minutes.
  11. If the mango is sour, it won't take much time to cook. Hardly 8 to 10 mins.
  12. Once the mango softens add cooked dal.
  13. Combine it well and lastly add red chilli powder.
  14. Once again mix it well and switch off the flame.
  15. Serve mamidikaya pappu with hot piping rice, papad mix/Appadala pinci and with challa mirapakayalu (curd chillis).
