Tomato Pulihora -- best to those who don't like tanginess of tamarind.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups Rice
- 8 to 10 Tomatoes
- Small pebble size Tamarind
- 6 to 8 Green Chillis
- 4" inches long Ginger
- Salt to Taste
- 1 Tbsp Turmeric Powder
- 4 Tbsp Ground nuts
- 1 Tbsp Chana Dal
- 1 Tbsp Urad Dal
- 1 Tbsp Mustard Seeds
- 1 Tbsp Cumin Seeds
- 5 Tbsp Oil
- 1/2 Tsp Hing
- 10 to 15 Curry Leaves
Procedure:
- Wash tomatoes, green chillis and ginger.
- Slit green chillis. Finely chop ginger.
- Wash rice and add 6 cups of water, that is for 1 cup rice add 2 cups water.
- Pressure cook for 3 whistles.
- Once the cooker cools down, spread the rice in a wide plate and cool completely.
- Add a spoonful of oil to absorb all moisture from the rice.
- Cut tomatoes into pieces.
- Add tomatoes and tamarind into the blender jar.
- Make juice out of it. Do not add water.
- Sieve it to get a smooth juice.
- Heat oil in a kadai, add ground nuts.
- Allow them to pop. Then add chana dal and urad dal.
- Fry them till they turn light brown.
- Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
- When they start splutter, add hing.
- Add slit green chillis, chopped ginger and curry leaves.
- Saute them for a minute.
- Add this tadka to the above rice.
- Again heat oil in the same kadai, add the above prepared tomato juice.
- Allow this to boil for a minute.
- Add salt to taste. Mix it well.
- Allow this tomato jucie to boil till it become like a thick paste.
- This may takes 10 to 15 minutes.
- Once the tomato puree turns into a paste, add it to the rice.
- Combine all the tadka and tomato puree well with the rice.
- Serve tasty tangy Tomato Pulihora with curd.
