Tomato pulihora best suits who cannot take tamarind pulihora. Tomato pulihora can be made without tamarind at all also, here I added a litttle bit of tamarind. We can avoid that also. The main ingredient in this recipe is tomato. For the sour taste we need to add little tamarind. If we get country tomatoes with full of sour taste we need not add tamarind. Tomato pulihora is another rice recipe without onion and garlic.

Tomato Pulihora

Tomato Pulihora -- best to those who don't like tanginess of tamarind.

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups Rice
  • 8 to 10 Tomatoes
  • Small pebble size Tamarind
  • 6 to 8 Green Chillis
  • 4" inches long Ginger
  • Salt to Taste
  • 1 Tbsp Turmeric Powder
  • 4 Tbsp Ground nuts
  • 1 Tbsp Chana Dal
  • 1 Tbsp Urad Dal
  • 1 Tbsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 Tbsp Cumin Seeds
  • 5 Tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 Tsp Hing
  • 10 to 15 Curry Leaves
Procedure:
  1. Wash tomatoes, green chillis and ginger.
  2. Slit green chillis. Finely chop ginger.
  3. Wash rice and add 6 cups of water, that is for 1 cup rice add 2 cups water.
  4. Pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  5. Once the cooker cools down, spread the rice in a wide plate and cool completely.
  6. Add a spoonful of oil to absorb all moisture from the rice.
  7. Cut tomatoes into pieces.
  8. Add tomatoes and tamarind into the blender jar.
  9. Make juice out of it. Do not add water.
  10. Sieve it to get a smooth juice.
  11. Heat oil in a kadai, add ground nuts.
  12. Allow them to pop. Then add chana dal and urad dal.
  13. Fry them till they turn light brown.
  14. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  15. When they start splutter, add hing.
  16. Add slit green chillis, chopped ginger and curry leaves.
  17. Saute them for a minute.
  18. Add this tadka to the above rice.
  19. Again heat oil in the same kadai, add the above prepared tomato juice.
  20. Allow this to boil for a minute.
  21. Add salt to taste. Mix it well.
  22. Allow this tomato jucie to boil till it become like a thick paste.
  23. This may takes 10 to 15 minutes.
  24. Once the tomato puree turns into a paste, add it to the rice.
  25. Combine all the tadka and tomato puree well with the rice.
  26. Serve tasty tangy Tomato Pulihora with curd.
