Upma -- Suji Upma -- How to make Upma

Upma or suji upma is South Indian special breakfast. It is a must in most of the gatherings like marriages and special occasions. It is liked by one and all. The more ghee and oil we put in the more tastier dish we get. This is the first among recipe I have learned in my early cooking days, of course not only me any one do the same.

  • Suji(semolina) - 1 and 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 1 big
  • Green chilies - 3
  • Ginger - 1" inch long
  • Curry leaves - 5
  • Coriander leaves - fistful (optional)
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Black gram - 1 tsp
  • Bengal gram - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 4 tbsp
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Water – 4 and 1/2 cups


  1. Chop onions, green chillies. Peel the skin of ginger and chop it also into small pieces.
  2. Heat oil in a wok and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, black gram and bengal gram. 
  3. Once they splutter and change their color add chopped green chillies and ginger. Add curry leaves also.
  4. Saute it till the onions become translucent and add salt and again saute. Add three cups of water to it.
  5. Bring it to boil. Once the water come rolling boil, add suji stirring continuously. 
  6. We have to be careful while adding suji as it is tend to form lumps, if we do not stir it properly. 
  7. Allow this to cook for 5 minutes.
  8. Once it is cooked completely add ghee and one tbsp of oil to it and mix it well.
  9. Serve it with curd and Mango pickle or even we can serve it with coconut chutney or peanut chutney.
  10. I prefer it with fresh mango pickle and curd.
