Broken Wheat Upma
Broken Wheat upma/ Daliya upma/ godhuma rawa upma is a very healthy breakfast as we add lot of veggies in it. It takes very less oil and I prefer to prepare it for dinner time. But today I made it for breakfast. It is very tummy friendly. It has all good qualities like easy to digest, less calorie food and also stomach filling. 
Of course as all my recipes it is also very easy to make. We get three varieties of broken wheat, one is very thin, medium and thick one. Prefer medium or thick one for upma and dosa. They take more water and also take longer time to cook. But taste, look and feel of the upma is very nice with them.


  • Broken Wheat/Daliya/Godhuma Rawa - 1 1/2 cup
  • Salt - to taste
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
  • Water - 4 1/2 cups
  • Carrot - 1
  • Capsicum - 1 
  • Peas - Fist Full
  • Potato - 1
  • Cauliflower - 5 to 7 florets
  • Beans - 5 to 7
  • Tomato - 1 
  • Onion - 1 
  • Garlic Pods - 4 to 6 (optional, but taste good)
  • Ginger - 3" long 
  • Green Chillies - 2 to 3

For Tadka:

  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tbsp
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 tbsp
  • Black Gram - 1 tbsp
  • Bengal Gram - 1 tbsp
  • Curry Leaves -  5 to 7
  • Coriander Leaves - Fist Full


  1. Chop all the vegetables. Chop green chillies, ginger and garlic.
  2. Heat oil in awide wok, add all the ingredients under 'For Tadka'. 
  3. When they start spluttering add green chillies, ginger, curry leaves and coriander leaves. 
  4. Add garlic pods also. Fry all of them for a while.
  5. Now add onions fry them till turn into translucent and add tomatoes. Fry them till they become mushy. 
  6. Add all the other vegetables, mix well. Add 4 1/2 cups of water.
  7. Add  salt and turmeric powder.
  8. Once the water starts boiling, simmer the flame, add rawa and mix well. 
  9. Allow the rawa to cook. Once the rawa is cooked and the water dried out remove from the flame. 
  10. Serve hot piping broken wheat upma/ Daliya upma/godhuma rawa upma with spicy peanut chutney

Enjoy a healthy breakfast!!

  1. There is a nice ratio between vegetables we use and rawa we take.
  2. Normally we do not give any importance to the this ratio, some times we do not care also. But if we consider this ratio upma taste really fantastic.
  3. Take one cup of rawa and one cup of all the vegetables put together. 
  4. We get three varieties of rawa, small, medium and fat. 
  5. For upma we use medium only, for this variety add 1:2 ratio of rawa and water. 
  6. If at all we have to use the thick one add half cup more water.
